Martha Palacio

Martha Palacio’s journey from Argentina to Australia is a testament to resilience, purpose and community empowerment. As an industrial engineer, assistant researcher at Melbourne Uni, and founder of the sustainability agency Circular Growth, Martha’s unwavering commitment to social and environmental sustainability is palpable. Her passion for practical outcomes led her to spearhead the development of a small community group dedicated to maintaining a community garden at Glenroy Hub.

Martha’s dedication to sustainability and community engagement gained new significance following personal adversity. Faced with a breast cancer diagnosis while her mother battled bowel cancer, she had to deeply think about what was really important to her. Embracing her second chance at life, she redirected her focus towards spearheading sustainability projects, finding solace and purpose in nurturing her surroundings and making a positive impact on her community.

Through her work at Glenroy Hub and Circular Growth, Martha embodies the motto of “start small, dream big.” She understands the power of community and the significance of social connections in fostering happiness and belonging. She supports a team of young people in a vocational program at Yooralla to contribute to the garden and learn new skills and confidence along the way.

Martha says, “If you want to make this world a better place, you need to start with yourself, your family, and your own neighbourhood. There, where you are!” Her story is a testament to the transformative power of resilience, compassion, strong faith and the profound impact one person can have on their community and beyond.
